Information Science
The client, the Canadian R&D
operation of a multinational chemical firm, required a simple way of
identifying experts in areas of chemistry of interest to the company's
operations.
Using information available on
the Internet a database of the research interests of the chemistry
faculty of all the Canadian universities, colleges and related research
institutes was compiled. This allowed R&D staff to quickly
identify and contact potential consultants when a particular problem
arose for which there was no available in-house expertise.
The company's Information Managment
staff were also able to use this data to set up a networked fully
searchable version of the database, with plans to extend coverage to
experts in other countries amd subject areas (for example, Chemical
Engineering).
